Information Searching & Indexing

Both searching and Indexing involve the same three stages:

Familiarization, Analysis, Translation

1, Indexing is the process whereby structure can be added to knowledge, in order to support more effective and more efficient retrieval. A document profile will be created during there three stages.

Familiarization: the indexer should get the subject of the content.

Analysis: the indexer should identify the central concepts which are worthy of indexing. And also consider the secondary and subsidiary themes.

Translation: the central theme must be described in terms which are present in the controlled indexing language. This process not only labeling the subject, but also indicating related subjects.

2, Searching use the document profile created by the indexing stage as a basis.

Familiarization: A searcher must be adequately familiar with what he or she wishes to retrieval.

Analysis: the step is to analyze the concepts present in the search. The search profile will comprise a series of search keys representing subjects and other characteristics of the search requirements that together indicate the scope and nature of the search.(next will be posted tomorrow)

update my blog from today

Writing is a good way to sharpen my thought and sort my idears, so I am going to write something everyday from now .

Today I studied the information user.

In order to do better information system design, it's meaningful to understand the information user.

Users can be categorized as:

Novice users: this kind of user need simple and intuitive interface.

expert users: they need short_cut to perform their task, menus always slow down their pace.

users with special need: they need some assistive technology to help them.
